"Peaceful Maccabee" is a performance piece, created by Rabbi Leah Novick. First presented at Temple Beth El in Aptos California in 2000; the video was directed by filmmaker Rabbi Sarah Leah Grafstein of Ruach Hamidbar, Scottsdale Arizona.
The work was inspired by the life of Queen Salome Alexandra (Shlom Zion Ha Malkah) one of the last Maccabean rulers, who led Israel in peace and prosperity shortly before the Roman conquest.
The queen, played by Rabbi Leah, is the anchor or "shamash" on the menorah. Eight other outstanding historical women were portrayed by members of Rabbi Leah's Jewish feminism classes. Each of the actors took the basic research and developed the character through their own insights.
The profiles include women from Baghdad to Berlin, Ukraine to the USA over two thousand years. They include poets, healers, writers and spiritual teachers from diverse cultures where Jews have lived.
Michelle "Hoda" Newman, a Santa Cruz musician and intuitive, directed the cast, which also included members of the community for scenes portraying the Sanhedrin /Jewish parliament.
